Burial at the Site of the Parish Church of St Benet Sherehog Before and After the Great Fire: Excavations at 1 Poultry, City of London (MoLAS Monograph) Condition: New Availability: Usually ships in 24 hours Price: $26.00 (It might be cheaper, visit top link) Editorial Review: Archaeological work at 1 Poultry includes analysis of 280 burials associated with the medieval church of St Benet Sherehog and a post-Great Fire burial ground on the same location. Post-medieval coffins and coffin furniture indicate that the burial population is primarily late, with a fifth dated to before the Great Fire, although none were associated with the primary phase of the church. The parish of St Benet Sherehog pre- and post-Fire is considered in terms of the documented population, occupations and wealth, and health and mortality. This is followed by evidence for the medieval church of St Benet and the religious life of the parish. 'Death and commemoration' looks at historical and archaeological evidence for funerals and burial practices. A detailed osteological account of the 17th- to 19th-century burial sample includes comparison with contemporary London cemetery populations. Lowest New Price:

Great Fire of London (Great Events) Condition: New Availability: Temporarily out of stock. Order now and we'll deliver when available. We'll e-mail you with an estimated delivery date as soon as we have more information. Your credit card will not be charged until we ship the item. Price: $6.49 (It might be cheaper, visit top link) Editorial Review: The great events of British history are part of our shared heritage and it is important that children know the facts behind the famous dates from a young age. In this series, Gillian Clements tells the stories of some of these events through a lively combination of text and illustration (including some speech bubbles, labelled maps etc). In this way she makes history child-friendly and accessible but still manages to incorporate, wherever possible, primary source material (such as eyewitness accounts and documentary evidence). THE GREAT FIRE OF LONDON retells the events leading up to the fire of 1666 and its consequences. THE GUNPOWDER PLOT looks at the reasons for the plan to blow up the houses of Parliament in 1605, and the key figures involved including Guy Fawkes. Each book has been thoroughly checked by a history educationalist for accuracy, language levels and appropriate content, and a timeline and glossary are included. These simple, gently-humorous stories give readers the information they need and encourage the development of a real sense of history and how it works. Lowest New Price:

Blitz Diary: Life Under Fire in World War II Condition: New Availability: Usually ships in 24 hours Price: $13.22 (It might be cheaper, visit top link) Editorial Review: Firsthand accounts of the experiences of ordinary people during the Second World War Historian Carol Harris has collected a remarkable series of accounts from the war's darkest days, with heartwarming stories of survival, perseverance, solidarity, and bravery, the preservation of which becomes increasingly important as the Blitz fades from living memory. As World War II loomed, everyone expected it would bring a new kind of conflict to Britain. Raids by airships in World War I and the attack on Guernica in the Spanish Civil War had given a terrifying taste of what was to come, so when war was declared in September 1939, massive air raids against civilians were anticipated. London was a major target throughout the war, but it was not only the capital that suffered: on November 8, 1940, 30,000 incendiary bombs rained down on Coventry, laying waste to the city, including, famously, its cathedral. Port cities such as Plymouth, Bristol, and Liverpool also suffered especially badly. Highlighting the effects of the Blitz outside of London, this anthology of excerpts from letters, memoirs, and diaries tells the story of the bombing as a chronological narrative, until the very end of the war. New London Firefighting (CT) (Images of America) Condition: New Availability: Usually ships in 24 hours Price: $15.59 (It might be cheaper, visit top link) Editorial Review: The New London Fire Department was born in 1767 when Nathaniel Shaw Jr. presented the city with its first fire engine. Since then, New London has had a successful history of emergency medical service, heroic assistance during natural disasters, and fantastic firefighting. The city's most notorious fire occurred on September 6, 1781. Under the command of the infamous traitor and New London County native, Gen. Benedict Arnold, British troops set New London ablaze. A great deal of life and property was lost. At a 1786 town meeting, residents began the first regular fire company, which eventually evolved into eight volunteer companies. New London Firefighting proudly chronicles its initial humble volunteer system up to today's technologically advanced apparatus and career personnel. Lowest New Price:
